Walking on Eggshells

Walking on Eggshells
This animated campaign seeks to comment on the issues of alcohol addiction and how it not only affects the addicted individual but also the family and friends who surround them. Alcoholism is a widespread issue that can have very serious consequences. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, “an estimated 88,000 people die from alcohol-related causes annually, making alcohol the third leading preventable cause of death in the United States.” [1] The animation uses colored eggshells to represent the feeling that family and friends might experience such as anxiety and nervousness. This animation targets friends and family and hopes that by presenting imagery that is representational of their situation, they might feel less ashamed, not alone and are empowered to seek out help.

The stop-motion animation is a call to action to contact the provided resource and receive support. The bright and playful eggshells allude to family and children contrasting against the black background which hints at the darkness and the shadow of the addict in their lives. The blue lighting adjustment expresses the switch that alcoholics make when they transition from being sober to intoxicated. This can also be interpreted as the exposition of the alcoholic's hidden side. The main subjects in the animation are an alcohol bottle and its contents that eventually form into a spiral representing the vicious cycle of falling in and out of the habit of drinking. It also represents how alcoholism can draw people into the addict’s personal struggles.
